Home: How-To Information: Hardwood: Transitioning to Hardwood Flooring

Selecting and Purchasing Carpet

Transitioning to Hardwood Flooring

The transition depends on the floor covering. For example carpeting may not require anything more than rounding off the edges. For vinyl flooring, you may need a transition strip that tapers into the other floor covering. The height of the two surfaces that you are transitioning will determine the type of transition strip needed, along with your own personal taste. Strips are from 1/2" to 3" in width, up to 1/4" high and can either be made of wood or metal, pre-manufactured or custom designed, depending on the doorway transition. Wooden transition strips should be sealed with the same protection that is used on the hardwood floor.
