Caring for your floors requires regular maintenance as described by the flooring manufacturer. But sometimes trying those time tested solutions that are passed from one to another by word of mouth can do the trick*.

TipzTime.com has collected many of these tips together in one place from visitors and following is just a sample:

  • For removal of black scuff marks on linoleum floors, use the eraser of a pencil. It works like a charm, especially if you have white floors such as myself. (Rachel Hamrick)

  • To stop wooden floors from creaking, use baby powder or talcum powder in the cracks. (Becky)

  • Toothpaste works on black scuff marks. We tried it, it works!(Anon) To remove skid marks on linoleum rub the spot with toothpaste before washing the floor. (Amy)

  • Take a paper towel or old cleaning cloth and put a little dab of mayonnaise on the cloth. Rub on scuff mark, and it will come out. I have tried this before and it works great!! You don't even have to rub hard. It has not damaged my linoleum. Be sure to spray an all purpose cleaner (glass cleaner works) where you used the mayonnaise. This will insure that the floor is not slick, and no one will slip and fall. (Wendy)

  • Believe it or not, black scuff marks on linoleum come out best if you simply rub with a dry fingertip. A dry paper towel is the second best solution. I used to try all kids of potions and scrubbers. Then one day I caught my son rubbing them out with his index finger. It really does work! (Irene)

  • For the mold and mildew stains ( grout cleaning) , put some baking soda into a container, then add enough bleach to make a paste. Apply it to the moldy / mildewed grout with a toothbrush. Wait until it is completely dry (I usually go away and come back later), then rinse it off using the toothbrush. It comes amazingly clean. (Diane)

  • No more mildew in the shower. Clean the shower very well. Then use GE silicone caulk sparingly on the grout. I've not had any mildew for over 8 years so far. (George B)

  • To remove coffee stains from carpets, try club soda and salt. First rub the club soda on and then sprinkle with salt. Rinse with a damp sponge.

  • I keep woven rugs from slipping on carpet, by putting shelf liner under my rugs. I use the rubbery kind that has a grip to it. It also works great when you place it on the cushions on your kitchen chairs, they won't slide around anymore and you won't have any more broken ties. (Sheri)
